Give it – don’t bin it

Reduce the impact of your move and help out a good cause – make sure you reduce, recycle, and dispose of your waste properly

Moving house provides a great opportunity to clear out your unwanted items (and maybe make room for some more). You can reduce your impact on the environment and help out a good cause by donating what you don’t want and recycling whatever you can.

During the peak moving times at the end of term, the council will provide additional waste and recycling collection – which means you don’t have to leave any rubbish behind when you leave.

Moving out of Halls?

The British Heart Foundation is working with your halls of residence to provide clothing donation bags, making it easier than ever to help out a good cause – and make space in your wardrobe for something new.

The British Heart Foundation bags are a great way to recycle items which might normally be a bit more tricky to recycle. Check with your Halls reception if you are receiving a BHF bag, and you can even ask for extra bags for free if you have more items you would like to donate.

What can I recycle in my BHF donation bag?

- Any clean clothes
- Shoes, please pair them together to help with sorting
- Books
- CDs and DVDs
- Clean bedding, including pillows, quilts, and bed linen
- Handbags, backpacks, laptop bags and luggage
- Small electrical appliances
- Clean crockery, including cutlery, plates, pots and pans

Please donate these from Monday 28th May to your nearest Give It…Don’t Bin It container; you will find them on the Fallowfield Campus, Victoria Park Campus and City Campus.

All donation banks are open 8am-3.30pm Monday-Friday.

Unsure what you might need in your new house? If you are moving in with new house mates, it is worth checking what everyone is bringing with them – particularly before splashing out on any new items. Everyone doesn’t need to bring their own iron, or kettles, or an abundance of pots and pans  – it all adds up adds up and starts getting difficult to store. Find out know who is bringing what and donate the items you don’t need while it is as easy as packing it into a donation bag which is being collected from your door step.
