Events for postgraduate and mature students
Published on 18 September 12
There are many different types of event in the Welcome period - and if you are a postgraduate or mature student then there is plenty of opportunity to meet other students, socialise, or just start to get to know your new campus.
Dive in to Welcome Week by attending the Start of Year Fair to find out the services on offer from the University, or the Welcome Fair at the Students' Union, with a wide range of groups, societies, sports clubs and more.
School, Centre and Hall Events
Many Schools and Centres for Doctoral Training run special events during the Welcome Period to help you meet fellow students and make connections - ask staff for details, check physical noticeboards and keep a close eye on your email account. If you are staying in halls, there will usually be plenty of social events for you to enjoy.
Get engaged
Are you interested in public engagement? Do you want to meet other like-minded people at the University? Would you like to hear some inspiring ideas? Engagement@Manchester monthly lunchtime meetings explore aspects of public engagement.
The next event is being held on Wednesday 19 September, 1pm – 2pm in room 1.009 of the Roscoe Building. This event will be exploring Community Engagement.
Everyone is welcome – no experience in public engagement is needed. There’s no need to book – just turn up. Teas and coffees will be provided, but please bring your lunch along with you. More information.
The Students' Union
The Union offers something for everyone. Pick up a hobby you have left behind, or always wanted to try, find something that suits you and just get involved.
From the Day Trippers’ Society to Manchester Extreme Sports Society, whatever you’re into, you’re sure to find a group of like minded people studying here at Manchester, click here for a full list of clubs and societies.
Peer support
It's a good idea to keep a look out for peer support activities that are organised by students who are more advanced in their studies - and as these schemes are course specific they are a great way to meet students studying the same courses as you.
If you are a Research student, make sure you keep an eye on the STEPS Blog - Skills Training Essential for PGR Students. This popular and regularly-updated blog is full of opportunities for development and networking with fellow students.
A wide variety of events and opportunities are also advertised on the student Noticeboard in the My Manchester student portal.
