Student Summer Success

Published on 18 September 12

Even though lecture theatres may have been a little quieter over the summer, Manchester students have still been busy achieving great things.

One of the University of Manchester’s undergraduates has contributed to a pioneering project, DNA bar-coding plants, in Wales. Her work has been recognised by being published in an international journal.

Helena Davies, a biology student, was completing her year in industry as part of her undergraduate degree at the Botanical Gardens.

Helena said: "It was absolutely fantastic to be so involved in a project with such potential on my year in industry. Being an undergraduate I didn’t think I would be able to contribute to such high impact research, so I feel incredibly lucky to have gained this experience.!

There has also been a great achievement by the Manchester Harmony Gospel Choir, who earlier this summer were named the University Gospel Choir of the Year at the annual competition held in London. Find out how to get involved with the Manchester Harmony Gospel choir or follow their progress here.

Although this is only the second year of the competition, last years winners went on to great success and went on to support X-Factor contestants live at Wembley Arena. To find out more about the competition check out there website here

And to top off the summer of success, an ambitious Masters student has launched a business - Beach Bacchanal - dedicated to providing fashionable swimwear for ladies with curvaceous figures.

Alex Gibson, 22, who has been learning business skills at Manchester Business School's Manchester Enterprise Centre recently started production. She is due to graduate with a Master of Enterprise in December.
