Are you performing at your peak this January?

Published on 9 January 13

It can be easy to forget about your health and wellbeing when it’s coming close to exam times, but you will not perform at your best if you don’t look after yourself.

Register with a GP

If you are not already registered with a GP in Manchester, make sure you sign up with one as soon as possible to make sure you can be seen quickly if you’re not well. You can find out how to register with a GP here. You can find out more about health services available in our ‘Staying healthy’ article.

For more advice about what services are available and when you should use them, take a look at our Choose well page.

Look after yourself

If you're planning on spending lots of time in the library, make sure you give yourself a chance to go home, get a shower and a change of clothes, the people working around you will appreciate it as much as you!

Despite how much you’ve got to do, you still need to take breaks from your work, not to concentrate on other chores; you need to allow yourself some time to wind down. Put some time aside to read a non-academic book, watch some mindless tv or have a catch up with friends.

Get active

Join thousands of other students who take part in our fun, yet competitive, inter-campus sports leagues every week. If you are a beginner, returning to sport or just want to play recreationally, Campus Sport is the ideal environment for you to develop your skills and build confidence.

There is also a great Halls Sport programme (http://www.sport.manchester.ac.uk/hall-sport), offering free coached sport and activities for anyone living in halls.

Wellbeing rooms

There are a number of rooms located in the Dover Street building and Sackville Street building dedicated to maintaining your health, fitness and wellbeing. Filled with pillows, mats, comfy chairs and a variety of fitness equipment, they make the perfect place to keep fit, relax, rejuvenate and escape from a busy campus.

You can enrol on a health and fitness class or join one of the free counselling sessions operated by the Counselling Service. For more details click here or pick up an Active Manchester leaflet.

Don’t let junk food drag you down

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of helping you feel good, and ward off illness – which is vital in the run up to a busy, January exam period. Have a look at this week's My Manchester Food monthly for ideas about simple recipes on the go, healthy breakfasts to start your day and organising your own 'Come Dine with Me'.

Can't shake the blues?

Don't struggle alone, there are many services you can turn to for advice. It may help to talk to someone at the free and confidential Student Counselling Service. Alternatively you can contact the free confidential listening service, Nightline.
