Cycle safely, or you could get a nasty surprise

Cycle Safety event at University Place follows announcment that Police are planning a clampdown on cyclists who break the law.
- Wednesday 6th February, 9am - 3pm, outside University Place
If you've ever ridden a bike along Oxford Road, you'll be only too familiar with the problems bus and lorry drivers have in seeing cyclists. Although research shows that there are blind spots in drivers' vision, it's sometimes hard to believe.
Now Greater Manchester Police want to give you the chance to find out exactly what a driver sees - by putting you in the cabs of a bus and lorry.
The transport giants are part of a cycling safety event, held outside University Place. A bus and HGV cab will be onsite, along with a host of other cycle related information. The focus will be on increasing understanding of large vehicle blind spots (you can sit in the driver’s seat and blind spots will be marked out on the ground) and education on the requirements for winter cycling.
The event follows the announcement by Police that they are planning a clampdown on cyclists who break the law.
Over the coming weeks GMP may have a presence on Oxford Road where they will be ticketing cyclists who break the law (for example, riding at night with no lights, running red lights, and cycling on the pavement). A ticket and fine will be issued which will be rescinded if the person attends an education session in the vicinity (these will be open to all, details to follow).
Make sure you are fully aware of what you can - and can't - do as a cyclist by coming along to the cycling safety event. You can also find relevant information about the law for cyclists in the Highway Code.
