In this month’s Food monthly we will be looking at lower carbon meals, St. Patrick’s day recipe ideas and some Easter treats
Climate week
Have you ever considered the carbon footprint of your meals? Red meat, non-seasonal vegetables and food which has travelled miles to reach the supermarket shelf all have high carbon footprints
To celebrate climate week, Manchester Carbon Literacy will be holding events at the Arndale centre. One of these stalls, Food footprints, has been organised by some students at the university with the help of cooler, and their aim is to get people to think about the carbon footprint of their food.
To find out more about Food Footprints and climate week, head down to the Arndale centre between 7-9th March.
St. Patrick's Day
Apart from Ireland, Manchester is one of the best places to celebrate St Patrick’s Day. On March 17th the city becomes alive with Irish spirit; the streets are adorned with traditional Irish songs and there are one or two Guinness hats to be seen.
But if you feel like starting the celebrations a little sooner, then take a look at our best Irish recipes to help you really celebrate the day.
Why not host an Irish dinner party? You could decorate your home with all things green and cook up a serious storm in the kitchen. You could make a traditional potato soup with soda bread or enjoy an Irish Guinness Rarebit.
For a hearty meal try a delicious Irish sausage and potato pie or a cheap but cheerful Irish stew. Alternatively, try mouth-watering Guinness bacon cheeseburgers. And if you still have room for dessert, how about a festive Baileys and chocolate cheesecake or a sweet and salty Guinness chocolate marshmallow pie?
If you prefer to make a selection of sweet treats for St Patrick’s Day, then take a look at our best bakes. Beer brownies add a slightly rich taste to the traditional brownie recipe and make a great alternative. Guinness chocolate chip cookies are perfect to nibble on throughout St Patrick’s Day.
Perhaps it is fair to say that no St Patrick’s Day is complete without an Irish coffee – the ultimate and most indulgent drink. But if you fancy throwing a St Patrick’s Day party then ‘wow’ your guests with some Irish jelly and green punch – packed full with Irish charm and flavour.
Easter bakes
Easter is only around the corner and what better way to celebrate than making your friends and family chocolate treats? It seems our supermarket shelves have become bombarded with costly Easter eggs, so why not make your own treats! For a speedy and indulgent Easter present idea then simply make an Eggstravaganza Eggsplosion. This rocky-road-like treat is crunchy and sweet as everything is smothered in chocolate. By adding Creme Eggs and Mini Eggs this chocolate slab offers a hint of Easter with every bite. Of course, traditional chocolate Easter egg nests always pops into mind when thinking about Easter. This super easy and quick idea can be whipped up in less than 15 minutes and provides lots of fun decorating with even more sprinkles of chocolate. |
If chocolate doesn’t tickle your taste buds, then why not try baking hot cross buns? The traditionally spiced and sticky buns always remain a family favourite around Easter time.
