Improvements planned for Wilmslow Road cycle route

£200,000 has been awarded to the council to make the busy cycle route safer for cyclists

Under the plans, dedicated and segregated lanes will be set up on the approaches to the junction on Wilmslow Road, to allow cyclists to reach the waiting area in safety. The traffic signals installed at the site will have dedicated lights for cyclists allowing them to set off and turn in safely before cars are released.

The idea for ‘cycle only’ traffic signals was developed after City Council officers met highways experts from The Netherlands when they came to Manchester last year.

The City Council has been awarded £200,000 to develop the scheme and it is intended that it will be completed by March 2014.

Prefer quieter cycle routes?

The funding will also pay for improvements to signage along the alternative cycle route which runs parallel to Wilmslow Road along quiet or traffic-free streets between Whitworth Park and Owen’s Park hall of residences and also provides a link to the Fallowfield Loop cycleway. The route is currently a well-used alternative to Wilmslow Road but these changes will encourage more people to use it.

Free cycle training

Free training is available to people who want to either learn how to cycle or to improve their confidence.
