Support your University in the Christie Championships 2013

28 sports, three universities, 1500 competitors, but only one winner! Liverpool and Leeds travel to Manchester for annual 'Battle of the North'

Get behind your University and support your sports clubs at Christie Championships 2013. On Wednesday 24thApril, students from the Universities of Liverpool and Leeds will invade our campus with one aim: to return home as Christie Champions.

Christie Championships started way back in 1886 when all three Universities were part of Victoria College. The format of the championships has changed somewhat but the rivalry is still fierce and although Manchester have dominated the championships in recent years, both Leeds and Liverpool have extremely strong teams, and an unwavering confidence.

Christie is the biggest triangular varsity competition of its kind in the UK and only comes to the Manchester campus once every three years. All three institutions must play each other at 28 different sports, in a gruelling six-hour schedule of fixtures.

Many of the sports play here on campus including football, hockey, swimming, netball, badminton, basketball, rugby union, table tennis and waterpolo – with the remaining sports playing at local venues around Manchester.

Even if you're not a member of a sports team, you can still show your support for your Athletic Union.

  • Pledge your support on twitter using #UoMChristie and claim your free supporters "Purple and Proud" t-shirt (500 to give away).
  • Head down to one of the venues on the day in your brightest purple attire to cheer on the Manchester teams.

“Having the support of fellow students at a home Christie Championships will make a big difference to our teams. It gives us a real boost to hear a crowd cheering from the sidelines and it creates an amazing atmosphere that can be enjoyed by players and spectators.”
