Volunteer of the year winners announced

The award ceremony was held on Thursday 9 May, where students, staff and alumni were recognised for their significant commitment to community activity

Alice Engelhard has been named Volunteer of the Year in the student category, receiving the University’s Social Responsibility Medal from Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell at an awards ceremony last week.

Alice is the lead coordinator of the Women’s Shelter project which works in a local shelter for homeless women. She leads a team of volunteers in organising an activity every Sunday afternoon for the women.  They cook the women a meal and run a variety of activities such as cooking classes, knitting and film nights.

The work Alice does at the women’s shelter is of immense importance as her team are the only group that go into the shelter on a regular basis. She also holds regular evaluation meetings for fellow leaders and volunteers, providing advice and guidance on how to work in such an environment.  These sessions have been invaluable as the centre is often a very challenging environment to work in meaning volunteers need maximum support.

Edward Booton and Jessica Nightingale were also recognised for their work with Student Action and Manchester Carers Forum respectively.
