The Careers service will be busy in the coming weeks hosting the Ethnic diversity fair, Volunteering fete, Engineering, Science and Technology fair, Finance, Business and Management fair, as well as opening applications for the Manchester Gold mentoring scheme.

Ethnic Diversity fairWhat is it?The Ethnic Diversity fair aims to celebrate cultural diversity, with exhibitors promoting opportunities for black and Asian students and graduates. This fair has representatives from a range of different professions so it’s perfect if you’re still unsure of what direction to take after graduation. Going to the fair will give you the opportunity to network with employers, it will allow you to gather materials which will help with your career research, and there will also be work experience and graduate job vacancies advertised by some of the exhibitors. Volunteering feteWhat is it?This is your chance to meet lots of charities and not-for-profit organisations making a real difference in the local community and find out how you can get involved. From small local community groups to large charities, there will be something for everyone. This will be a great opportunity to meet lots of organisations who are making a difference locally, take part in different volunteer taster activities, ask the experts how you can volunteer with their organisation, and find out how volunteering can improve your employability and career prospects. Engineering, Science and Technology fairWhat is it?This fair brings you 80 top recruiters from engineering, science and technology who are promoting their training schemes, vacation placements and work experience. Manchester Gold MentoringWhat is it?With the Manchester Gold Mentoring scheme, you will have the opportunity to be mentored by an experienced professional who will support you with your career planning and provide an insight into the workplace or the specific sector you are interested in. This scheme is highly regarded by both recruiters and students so make sure you make the most of it. How to make the most out of Careers fairs
If you prepare in advance of going to a fair you will find that you could get much more from the day and feel less flustered by all of the different opportunities.
- Do your research so you know which recruiters are worth spending more time with.
- Bring some copies of your CV with you on the day.
- Prepare a few simple questions in advance to introduce yourself and show your motivation and interest in their company.
- Collect a guide of the fair on the day so you don’t miss any recruiters.
- Dress smartly, a good first impression counts.
- Before leaving a stand take the name of the person who you’ve been speaking with in case you want to get back in contact with them.
- Don’t be distracted by the recruiters who have the best freebies on offer, you won’t want to miss out on an excellent opportunity because the next table were giving out free mugs!
