Moving house can be stressful so follow our checklist to make sure you’re prepared
Plan ahead
Here are some things you should consider before you start moving
- Moving in with friends next year? You don’t need a toaster, kettle and microwave each so figure out who will be bringing what and donate or sell your unwanted items.
- Sort through your wardrobe – Moving gives you the perfect opportunity to sort through your wardrobe and get rid of those clothes that you’re not going to wear.
- Donate your items – The council and the British Heart Foundation have banks across campus that are there for you to donate your unwanted items, find out more about donating your unwanted items below.
- Shop lightly – When doing your food shopping, think about what you will need before you move and try to use up tinned and frozen food.
Starting to move
- Find boxes and tape – You will probably be surprised at how much stuff you own when it comes to moving so make sure you have plenty of boxes to pack it away into to.
- Organise any help – Has anyone volunteered to help you move? If so, make sure you’ve got arrangements planned.
- Start packing as early as possible - Books, DVDs, course notes; start packing these as soon as possible so you’re not struggling at the last minute.
- Who to contact - You will need to contact all of your utility suppliers, bank, doctors etc to let them know you are moving, use this who to inform checklist to make sure you’ve got everything covered.
- Look out for advice next week about how to make sure you get your deposit back if you’re leaving a private rental property.
