If you have a new tenancy starting soon, you need to apply for council tax exemption as soon as you have signed your tenancy contract. If you don’t get your council tax exemption, you may be faced with a court summons or legal action.

Living in Halls of residence
If you live in University Halls you are automatically exempt and you do not need to take further action
Living in Manchester
If you live in Manchester and you are not an International student with dependents, apply online through www.manchester.gov.uk. All students in your property must register for exemption if they don’t you will still get a bill
Living outside of Manchester
If live outside Manchester you will need a paper exemption certificate from the Student Services Centre. All students in your property must register for exemption – if they don’t you will still get a bill
International students with dependents
International students with dependants will need a paper exemption certificate from the Student Services Centre.
Living with non students
If you live at home with parents or other non-students, the property you live in will still be liable for council tax.
