With your masters degree coming to a close, you may be thinking about moving out. Here's some things you should consider when moving on.

1: Get packing

Books, notes, clothes, kitchen utensils! It's amazing how much stuff you collect over a year or two. Even if you're a seasoned mover it can be surprising how long it takes to pack it all up. Start as early as possible to avoid last minute panic.

2: Sort out your unwanted items

Starting your packing early also gives you an opportunity to have a good sort through your items. Do you have clothes that you're just never going to wear again? Do you really need that copy of Methods in Enzymology? We thought not.

Once you've sorted the wheat from the chaff, don't just throw your junk away. You can donate unwanted items to the British Heart Foundation using the collection bins located at University Halls of Residence, even if you're in private accommodation. See the Don't bin it...Give it article for more details.

3: Organise

Have you arranged for anyone to help you move? If you've got lots of stuff, try and get together with housemates to help one another move items. If you're asking someone with a car to help out, give them plenty of notice.

You also need to think ahead to exactly when you're going to leave. Think about how much food and other groceries you'll between now and then, and shop lightly to avoid waste.

4: Tell everyone you're moving

We don't mean everyone, but there are lots of people you need to tell before you move on. You will need to contact all of your utility suppliers, bank, doctors etc. to let them know you are moving, use this who to inform checklist to make sure you’ve got everything covered.

5: Get your deposit back
