Free weekend of art and music marks end of an era at the Whitworth

Published on 10 September 13

Whitworth Weekending will take place in Whitworth Park from 4pm on Friday, 30 August until late on Sunday, 1 September.

This special event is the Gallery's way of saying goodbye before it closes for a major extension and transformation project, and of thanking everyone who makes the Whitworth what it is.

Come along and celebrate the last days of the Whitworth as we know it. The Gallery and park will teem with life; indoors and outdoors, we will enjoy the last moments of this chapter of the Whitworth’s history.

The goodbye begins at 4pm on Friday with the best of After Hours, continues with a host of festivities on Saturday and the drama and spectacle will come to a head on Saturday evening as we make a show on the fabric of the building itself.

As dusk falls on Sunday, Nick Crowe and Ian Rawlinson, artists who know Manchester and the Whitworth well, will mark both the end of the weekend and the beginning of a new chapter in the Whitworth’s history with Six White Horses, a new work that is enchanting, beautiful and elegiac, befitting this pivotal moment.
