Keep yourself and your belongings safe

Living in a bustling and thriving city is one of the most attractive things about studying in Manchester, but make sure you're aware of how to stay safe

  Student Safe Zone sign

Student safe zone

The student safe scheme offers you a place you can go to if you feel threatened or vulnerable, where you can access assistance.  If you are worried about your safety and you see a business with a ‘Student safe zone’ sign, you can use their premises to stay safe, contact friends/hall wardens, phone for a taxi or contact emergency services.

All members of staff in businesses that are part of the scheme have been trained to deal with students who are in need of safety, so don’t take any risks and make use of their service if you feel you need to.

For a comprehensive list of all the businesses that are part of the scheme can be found here.

Safe taxi

The Student’s Union have joined forces with Union cars to provide the safe taxi scheme for you. This scheme enables you to get home safe using your student card if you don’t have the money to pay for your taxi fair.

All you need to do is phone Union cars on 0161 225 5566 and quote ‘Manchester SU Safe Taxi Scheme’, then once you’re home you hand the driver your student card in exchange for a journey receipt and after 24hours you can collect your student card from the Students’ Union in exchange for the price of the taxi fair.

Laptop lockers

Protect your castle

Help keep your home the safe haven it should be, by doing your best to deter burglars. Simple steps like sharing a cab with a friend, keeping valuables out of sight and investing in a timer for the lamps in your house or flat can make a whole lot of difference.

Do a quick check of your house before stepping out of the front door. There might not be any chance of catching a summer breeze any more, but your house mates may have opened windows or doors after cooking, or having a hot shower. Always double check everything is locked up as it should be, and you have done everything you can to hide valuables out of sight of potential thieves before leaving the house.

Help make every room in your house look lived in, even when you are all out and about, with a timer on a few lamps. It’s much nicer than coming home to dark and empty rooms, as well as a deterrent to thieves. They are available from most pound stores, so you can get as many as you need without breaking the bank.
