Pass it on: Your advice for thriving at Manchester

Published on 27 September 12

We have been busy collecting your tips and advice about the things you wish you’d known sooner. So, to save you some time, we’ve compiled together all of the most useful ones.

If only I’d known how easy it is to get involved with extra-curricular activities

There are lots of different things that you can get involved with as a student, whether you want to get involved with sports or you would just like to support other students. These activities are great to have on your CV and can help you build the skills that employers will be looking for.

Students as partners co-ordinate and maintain peer support throughout the University. If you would like to find out more about the roles and responsibilities of PASS (Peer Assisted Study Sessions) leaders and Peer mentors and learn about their achievements click here.

The Students’ Union also provides many different opportunities for students to get involved with extra-curricular activities, from becoming a Student Representative to joining Societies or even raising money for charity with RAG.

If only I’d known to use the careers service earlier

Don’t leave figuring out your calling in life until the final year of your studies, as, with the increase in workload, you may have less time to contemplate your career options than you thought. You should visit the Careers Service (Crawford House, Booth Street East) or have a look at Career KickStart online.

If only I’d known there are free sports opportunities

We have a wide range of different sports opportunities you can get involved with, from either sport for fun or sport at a more competitive level. You can find out about what’s on offer here.

If only I’d known I could change course

If you’re unhappy on your course it is really important to speak to someone about it. You academic advisor should be able to help you find out what your best option will be whether that’s to continue on your course or to look at changing courses or leaving all together.

Alternatively you could speak to your programme director, student support officer or your school office. For more advice about what you should consider if you’re unhappy on your course, click here.

If only I’d known you can access your exam transcripts

Our policy states that schools must facilitate your requests to see exam scripts without charge. Ask your course leader to find out how you can access them as the process is different within each school.
