Manchester students sparkle at BUCS Gatorade Nationals 2013

It has been another exciting weekend as Manchester students have triumphed with an array of gold, silver and bronze medals at the BUCS Gatorade Nationals 2013 (British Universities and Colleges Sport)

More than 6,000 students descended on Sheffield last weekend for the BUCS Gatorade Nationals 2013. Manchester was there in full force with competitors in nine out of the twelve sports featured. And they didn’t disappoint, bringing home an array of gold, silver and bronze medals, a fist full of BUCS points and lots of great sporting moments to share.

Judo athletes fought their way to victory as Rosana Dutkiewicz and Sigita Zigure won gold medals in each of their individual weight categories, whilst Stephen Woltering secured a bronze. Meanwhile, over at Ponds Forge the Women’s Karate were awarded the team bronze in Kumite, whilst individuals Christina Finta, Erica Pericas-Hewitt, Holly Carey and Victoria Ogunseitan picked up further bronze medals in their various Kumite categories, making an impressive total of 5 bronze medals for Women’s Karate. Adding to an already impressive collection, Brian Kayanga went on to secure the gold medal in the Men’s Senior Kumite.

Sport scholars Scott Wong and Jack Andrew faced tough competition in the Athletics but battled through the heats to make the final in their events.

Scott Wong finished in 4th place overall in the Shot Put whilst Jack Andrew finished 5th in both the pole vault and 60m hurdles. Jack is normally a multi-disciplinary athlete so to final in both these events is an excellent achievement.

Over in the badminton, Ben Dolman made it through to the quarter finals of the men’s individual tournament but was knocked out by Manchester graduate, turned Leeds postgraduate, Jamie Bonsels who went on to the final and finished 2nd overall.

Well done to all the competitors that took part in the BUCS Gatorade Nationals. It was a fantastic weekend for Manchester and it was great to see so many purple vests out there representing the University. Teams have been training hard for this event and it really paid off with lots of points gained to secure our overall position in the BUCS table.

Other individual medals came from Lukask Posnik who won gold in the men boxing (U71kg), fencer Mihai Rascu picked up silver after a fantastic performance in men’s foil event and Chris Lam reclaimed his gold medal in the men’s individual ten pin bowling. Last but not least, men’s trampolining added to the medal count as they somersaulted their way to a team gold medal.
