Help and advice to get you through the summer months without worrying about finances

You’ve spent the last academic year with your head in books, late nights studying hard, gearing up for your end of year exams and are looking forward to a summer of festivals, holidays and all round R&R. However, as the end of year draws closer, you realise that the funds in your bank account and getting lower and lower and you begin to wonder where the money is going to come from to make your plans a reality…

If you receive a Student Loan, you will probably already know that until your final year, you receive a higher rate of loan as Student Finance make some efforts to contribute to the summer months. However, if this is not enough, the biggest source of income for students during the summer is through employment. The University’s Careers Service can help you to find part time work here in the UK or you could consider one of the many schemes that provide work and accommodation overseas such as Camp America or Keycamp/Eurocamp.

Log into My Manchester and go to the My Campus Life Tab to see a latest feed of part-time jobs.

For those of you who have children, it may be possible to apply for certain means-tested benefits during the summer months to help you with your costs although the criteria for these is quite strict, therefore you should check if you are eligible with Job Centre Plus in the first instance.

If you experience an emergency or similar unexpected event during the summer, the University can offer assistance through its financial support funds: the Access to Learning Fund and the Bridging Hardship Fund. The information on our website will tell you more about these funds including how to apply.
