Student house to be built in University Place

Greater Manchester Police using the mock accommodation to help you keep your valuables safe and secure

On Thursday 25th October Greater Manchester Police will be building a mock student house in University Place around midday to raise awareness of safety issues. Figures show that  80 student homes were burgled between 10 September and 14 October 2012. Forty-eight of these could have been avoided if the homes had been made secure.

The display depicts typical University accommodation complete with cans of beer and bottles of leftover wine. The initiative is designed to highlight the risks of leaving valuables on view and shows the vulnerabilities of advertising your items in such a way.

A flash-mob made up of students will also be involved to make students aware of the crimes that can take place in their homes without them realising.

The aim of our initiative is to highlight to students that it’s not just the monetary value of the items that have been stolen but also the irreplaceable value they hold. Laptops alone contain music collections, photos and for those second and third year students lecture notes and work that would contribute to your final grade. Andy Smith, Student Safety Inspector
