Students gear up for Christie Championships

Manchester will be given the opportunity to regain their title at the much anticipated Christie Championships 2012 on 25 April.

Hundreds of students from the University’s sports clubs will travel to Liverpool to compete against University of Liverpool and University of Leeds in the ultimate battle of the North.

Christie Championship has a long history, dating back to 1886, when it was primarily an athletics event between Owen’s College (Manchester), Yorkshire College (Leeds) and Liverpool.

In 1901 the Christie Cup and Shield was donated by Mary Helen Christie, widow of Richard Copley Christie, a former academic of Owen’s College, Manchester.

After the Cambridge and Oxford rivalry, the Christie Championships is the oldest inter-University competition on the sporting calendar.

Despite a decline in Christie competitions from the 1950s to 1980s, the championships has stood the test of time and is now more successful than ever, largely thanks to support from various sponsors – this year it is Ernst & Young – and the amalgamation of all sports events into one afternoon of competition, at one University campus.

Agi Duhig, Sport Sabbatical Officer, said: "The standard of play at Christie is always very good but our clubs are riding high and in good form after a successful BUCS Championships last month so I am more than confident that the trophy will be firmly back in our hands next week.

"Good luck to everyone who is taking part, take pride in wearing your University colours and bring that trophy home."
