John Rylands name change

Published on 18 May 12

The University Library has updated its name and branding

There are nine libraries based at different locations around campus, which will now be referred to collectively as The University of Manchester Library.

Why re-name?

The University reviewed the Library name and branding, as the current name of ‘John Rylands University Library’ often causes confusion for staff, students and visitors.

This name change will enable The John Rylands Library located on Deansgate to be more easily identified.

So is there actually a John Rylands Library or not?

The John Rylands Library is a beautiful Vicorian Gothic building in Deansgate, and contains many rare texts and special collections, as well as playing host to exclusive art, music and literary events.

The Main Library is on Oxford Road, and hosts a wide variety of study spaces and computer clusters, as well the majority of course texts.

The Joule Library has recently been refurbished, and is based in the Sackville Street building.

There are lots of other smaller or subject specific libraries based around campus. All the libraries will be collectively referred to as The University of Manchester Library. Find out more about the different library locations and opening hours across campus.
