A chance to change your journey to and from University

Published on 24 May 12

From Monday 28 May to Friday 8 June there is a chance to give your feedback on proposals to improve your journey into University along what's known as Corridor Manchester.

Students from Manchester Metropolitan University and Manchester School of Architecture have worked with professional architecture practices to design new schemes to improve the public realm in two areas on the busy Oxford Road.

Their proposals will be exhibited in the Foyer of the Manchester Technology Centre (Oxford House), Oxford Road, Manchester, M1 7ED (next to the old Kro and near the old BBC building) and you are invited to give your feedback at the following times:

Monday 28th May (12noon – 5pm)
Tuesday 29th May (10am – 6pm)
Wednesday 30th May (10am – 3pm)
Thursday 31st May (10am – 3pm)
Friday 1st June (10am – 3pm)

(The exhibition is closed during the Jubilee bank holiday weekend)

Wednesday 6th June (10am – 3pm)
Thursday 7th June (10am – 3pm)
Friday 8th June (10am – 3pm)

The teams were asked to consider approaches that might be possible to transform two key gateways to Oxford Road.

The first gateway is the Mancunian Way. While the Mancunian Way is not a physical barrier to the continuity of the pedestrian corridor, the flyover gives the impression of being the ‘edge’ or perimeter of the city. This implies to visitors that there is little worth exploring past this barrier. In improving the appearance of the underpass visitors are more likely to want to explore further.

The second area is between the Contact Theatre and Whitworth Park. The walking and cycling routes can appear confusing and shops and cultural facilities can feel cut off from the road and pavements.

Many of you travelling to and from University daily will pass these areas, so make sure your voice is heard.
