Students scoop top prizes

Student volunteers, peer mentors and PASS leaders and student entrepreneurs are recognised for their hard work and dedication.
- Student volunteer of the year
History student Jack Burke has been named the Student winner at the Volunteering and Social responsibility awards, for his work managing a weekly soup kitchen with Student Action.
Jack received his University Distinguished Achievements Medal from President and Vice Chancellor Prof Dame Nancy Rothwell, for his hard work ensuring the continued success of the soup kitchen, throughout difficulties of relocation, as well rasing funds to support the project by completing 55 mile walks for charity.
- Students as Partners awards night
With over 1,500 students involved in the Students as Partners programme, the annual awards night to celebrate the hard work of Peer Mentors’ and PASS Leaders’ has outgrown all suitable venues on campus and was held earlier this month at The Palace Hotel.
The evening saw successes for a number of teams in the PwC ‘Student Team Working Awards’ (Extra-Curricular Winners: ‘Mathematics PASS Coordinators’ and Curricular Winners: ‘Accountancy System for Westcroft Community Centre’) as well as ‘George Kenyon Residents’ Association’ in the Hall of Residences ‘Presidents Prize’.
The final Awards were for those students who had made an ‘above and beyond’ contribution to Peer Support. 15 exceptionally dedicated students were recognised in the individual awards and two schemes received commemorative plaques: Religions and Theology PASS and Audiology Peer Mentoring.
The organisers send a big thank you and well done to all those who contributed to such a successful night.

- Venture Further winners
Congratulations also to the student founders of innovative energy food company, Kaffeination Ltd, awarded £4,000 by the Venture Further 2012 competition.
Venture Further is the Manchester Enterprise Centre’s (MEC) annual business creation competition, doling out funds to creative students taking the leap to start their own business.
This year's winner Kaffeination Ltd, led by Manchester Business School student Matthias Schmid, was awarded the money towards the start up of a food energy company.
Other entries included Love Meat - an online butcher, Beach Bacchanal - a company specialising in plus size swimwear, Dukaan - a mobile app for fashion lovers, Bambi Bakery - a handmade celebration cakes business, and The Social Action and Research Foundation - a social enterprise aiming to empower local communities to tackle poverty.
Students from all subject areas across the University can enter, with the opportunity of winning part of a £5,000 prize fund to put towards a student business start up. Entrants can be individuals or a team, and the MEC also provides special workshops designed to help all entrants research, develop and successfully submit your entries.
