Comedian arrives at University with Olympic torch

The Olympic torch has today (Thursday) scaled the magnificent Lovell Telescope at the University's Jodrell Bank site.

The Olympic torch relay is visiting around 95% of the UK in the run up to London 2012, and it was carried into the 250ft dish of the Lovell telescope by comedian John Bishop.

Jodrell Bank is the astronomical research centre for The University, home to the famous Lovell Telescope and attracts thousands of visitors a year as an interactive discovery centre. It was recently chosen as the world headquarters for the Square Kilometre Array, the world’s largest telescope, and opened a £3m state-of-the-art visitor centre last year.

The University President and Vice-Chancellor Dame Nancy Rothwell welcomed the torch on to the observatory site.

Two Manchester students have already participated in the relay, Blaire Hannen carried the torch into her home town of Bristol, and Zak Lee Green carried the flame in Cardiff.
