Looking for private accommodation? Make sure you rent right.

Whether you're a returning student, or looking for your first place to live in Manchester, make sure you've got the best advice on choosing private accommodation.

There is wide range of student accommodation available in Manchester, so it's a good idea to look around and don't feel pressured to sign up to a property straight away. In particular, don't rush into signing a contract for a property you haven't seen - and never pay money for a property from overseas.

We recommend you choose a landlord who is accredited with Manchester Student Homes, which means they have signed up to the MSH Code of Standards and should manage the property properly. If you have any problems during the tenancy Manchester Student Homes can help, and are also happy to check your contract before you sign on the dotted line.

Houseshares are still the preferred choice for students:

Don’t fancy a house share? Private halls are also a popular choice. They are generally more expensive, at around £90 to £130pppw but the rent will normally include utility bills, and considered to be a better alternative for student letters than signing on for a one bedroom flat.

Make sure you don’t take signing a contract lightly – you are signing a legally binding document. It is better to take your time and seek advice before signing, than get a surprise later on. Make sure you know what you are liable for, and what the landlord must provide.

When you start looking for accommodation, please remember to think about your own safety and security – you should never go to view a property on your own. If you view a property during the day, be sure to properly look at the area, will you feel safe walking to your front door at night? Would you trust your belongings were secure in the property when you weren’t there? No matter your budget, or if you are only living in the property part time, you deserve a safe and secure home you feel happy in.
