Study etiquette

Are you a cruncher, a hogger or a shusher? Here’s how not to annoy everyone in the library this exam period.

  1. Food-friendlies
If it smells, sizzles, squirts or sticks, it probably isn’t studying fodder. Breakfast is great for boosting your brain power, but no one wants a jam-splodged desk. Be considerate and opt for porridge pots, sarnies or soups, or better yet take a break from your pile of books and eat al fresco.

  2. Talkers
Some of your fellow students will be digesting some pretty dry material, the last thing they need is distraction by way of your conversation. Put your phone on silent, and if you need to have a convo do it quietly or head to the stairway.

  3. Headphone-a-phobes
A library essential. Maybe you work better with background music, maybe you’ll want to catch up on Neighbours during study breaks, or perhaps your research includes video material – respect other people’s concentration (and soap opera tastes) and pop on your headphones.

  4. Space hoggers
Space can get scarce in all University libraries and common areas at peak times, so while it isn’t fair to dump a few books and spend a leisurely lunch in the SU Bar, you can use the Exam Extra postcards to jot down what time you left and hold your seat for 30 minutes. There are also charging station lockers in both Ali G and the main library, where you can store your things and recharge your devices while you grab some sunshine/caffiene/sustinence.
