5 top tips for studying away from campus

Published on 2 April 14

As the Easter break approaches and the weather continues to improve, it's tempting to go home and forget all about your upcoming deadlines. Here are our top tips for working at home.

1. Use your local library

If you find the lure of the sofa or the fridge too much, have you considered going to work at your local library? You’ll have less distractions and working to their opening hours will encourage you to work to a schedule.

2. Have print outs of what you need and download everything before you go

Make sure you've rented the essential textbook, have downloaded the papers and reviews you need and have all of your lecture notes with you before you go. Have a checklist and tick it off whilst packing.

3. Have a designated work environment

If you're studying away from campus you need a proper place to work, with enough space for you to sprawl all of your materials out and get stuck in. Make sure you have a proper desk, or a quiet place where you won't be disturbed while you work.

4. Have a work schedule and stick to it

We all know how tempting it is to stay in bed until noon work until four and then go off to see a friend in the evening, but can you afford to do this? Make sure you're doing all the work you need to; plan what work you're going to do each day.

5. Treat yourself

Whether it’s an episode of your favourite programme, a snack, or a meet up with some friends, make sure you aren't overloading yourself with unrealistic goals, and give yourself some time to think about the work you're doing.

The library's My Learning Essentials has workshops and online tutorials to help you organise your work.
