Oxford Road closure - latest news

Published on 22 September 14

A section of Oxford Road, close to the University, has been closed to allow for repairs to a collapsed sewer.

Following extensive repairs over the past two weeks, a new survey of the area on Saturday 20 September revealed several new voids under the road surface. Further work is now underway to investigate these holes, with work expected to resume later this week.

United Utilities, who are responsible for the sewer, began excavating the site for repair on 4 September, and had given an initial estimate of four to six weeks for the works to be completed.

How does this affect me?

Currently, only the 38, and the 142 and 143 Magic Buses are running in both directions between Fallowfield and bus stops on Oxford Road campus - at the Students' Union, and the Precinct centre.

The following bus services continue to NOT run along Oxford Road:

15, 16, 18,  41, 42, 43, 44, 53, 111, 157, X41, X57

Alternative routes are in operation.

The 147 route is unaffected between Sackville Street and the Students' Union on Oxford Road and along its whole route. Visit the online bus tracker (2 to 3 minute delay) to find full service information.

How do I get to campus?

From Fallowfield: If you're able to get on a 38, 142 or 143, you can stay on the bus all the way to the Students' Union or Precinct centre on Oxford Road campus, or get off at Revolution/Starbucks for Sackville Street campus. These buses are likely to be extremely busy.

On other services, the simplest way is to get off at the corner of Whitworth Park (see map below). Oxford Road campus is just a 10 minute walk from that stop; directly along Oxford Road.

While you'll be unable to step off a bus right outside your lecture theatre or the Students' Union, almost all buses will run close to campus. You can see the suggested stops for different parts of the Oxford Road campus on this map:

Buses which usually run along Upper Brook Street (such as the 50) are unaffected by the works.
