Give it, don't bin it!

Whether you're moving to new accommodation next year, leaving Manchester for good or just having a good spring clean before heading off for the summer, it's a great opportunity to give your unwanted things to charity.  Did you know that up to 60% of rubbish can be recycled?  Here's a couple of easy ways to give to charity and recycle at the same time!

British Heart Foundation

Give It Don’t Bin It is a student move out collection and recycling service where the British Heart Foundation (BHF) collects unwanted items across Manchester.  If you’re living in halls there will be a collection bin close by, for those of you living off campus don’t worry there are plenty of volunteers delivering packs to student houses.

For more information on the Give It Don’t Bin It and to find your nearest BHF Collection Bank visit:

Things you can donate to BHF:

If you live in University halls you should have received information regarding the British Heart Foundation collection bins.  If you’re in private accommodation you will receive information at the beginning of June.

Did you know that the BHF also do a free furniture collection?

Food, food and more food

You’re starting to clean you room but still have unopened, non-perishable food which you don’t want to take with you.  Instead of throwing those out you can recycle them too!  You can take them to the nearest University Hall Reception or Manchester Student Homes.  All food donations will go to FareShare.

There’s also the Manchester Central Foodbank opposite the Students’ Union. Nothing goes to waste!

Don’t want to take those heavy textbooks with you?Textbook Rescue is a bid to save hundreds of unwanted textbooks from a life of gathering dust and an opportunity for you to donate your old textbooks to new students. You won’t have to take them very far; library collection points are located around campus.

Last year over your generosity provided new students with over 1000 free textbooks.

This year, we want to help even more, so if you have any textbooks that you know you won't need next year, please donate them to the new students who will be starting this September.

After you have completed your assignments and exams, simply take your unwanted textbooks to your site library* and drop them off at the donation point.  A member of staff can point you in the right direction.

*Please note that the Learning Commons and The John Rylands Library will not be acting as donation points.

And if there is anything left…
