Will you make the most of your summer break?

It may not feel like it with this typical Mancunian weather, but summer is fast approaching. You might already have something lined up for the break – an internship, some work experience, volunteering, a summer job or even some travelling – but whatever you have planned, the important thing is that you really get stuck in this summer and make the most of the opportunities that come your way.

Don’t panic if you don’t have anything planned for the summer yet; there’s still time to find some casual vacation work. If you’re going back home, check the local papers and ask your friends and family to look out for opportunities for you.

Already got a summer internship or vacation job lined up? It can feel a bit daunting, but with a little preparation you really will get loads out of the experience. Follow these steps to make your work experience as valuable as possible.

Whatever you do this summer, don’t put too much pressure on yourself. Employers are realists; they’re not expecting every student to have spent their summers working for international companies on competitive internship programmes. Your job in a coffee shop or the volunteering you did in your home town can be just as valuable. Just take the time to reflect on the skills you’re developing and the things you enjoying doing – it will all help in the future.
