3 ways to eat heathily on a budget

We know that 65% of students let finances affect their diet* so here are our top healthy eating tips which are kind to both your health and pocket.

  1. Preparation is key

As a student your life can get busy and the last thing you may think about doing is preparing your food in advance. Prep is a great way to ensure you are eating healthy food which doesn't cost the earth. The weekend is a perfect opportunity to plan your meals for the week, this way you'll only buy the ingredients you need, reducing waste and spending.

Batch cooking is also a great way to prepare extra meals for your busiest times. After a busy day it's tempting to buy a ready meal rather than spend hours slaving away over your dinner. Why not spend a few hours one weekend preparing a big portion of your favourite meal and freeze extra portions? Cooking can also be a great way to socialise with your housemates!

  2. 5 a day

The NHS recommends we get at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables each day. Fruits and vegetables are a good source of vitamins, minerals and fibre, which are vital for maintaining a healthy balanced diet. Fresh veg might seem expensive but there are other alternatives, you could buy a frozen vegetable mix or tinned vegetables which are usually cheaper and have a longer shelf life.

Beans and pulses are also a great way to get vitamins and minerals into your diet. A tin of chickpeas could cost you as little as 35p, so as well as being a great source of protein they are also a great way to bulk up meals, meaning your tasty chicken curry stretches even further!

  3. Lunches

Did you know if you were to buy your favourite meal deal every day you would spend £600? That could go towards a trip to your favourite festival or a luxury holiday abroad. You could invest in a flask to bring hot soup, or freeze a loaf of bread to prepare sandwiches each day. Bringing your own lunches could also help you to avoid fizzy drinks and crisps, meaning you consume less sugar. Never be tempted to skip lunch to save money, it is important to nourish your body to meet the demands of student life.
