Manchester Access Programme (MAP) is now recruiting for academic tutors for 2017.

Published on 19 October 16

Becoming a MAP tutor is a great way to develop your tutoring skills whilst contributing to the University’s social responsibility goals - with the added bonus of earning money at the same time.

The programme

MAP is the University’s flagship widening participation scheme, supporting the progression of talented local sixth form (Year 12) students into The University of Manchester or another research intensive university.

There will be over 600 students on the programme this year - all attended state school and have no history of higher education in their family. Successful participants earn a two grade reduction towards an admissions offer from The University of Manchester and a scholarship.

The role of a tutor

MAP Academic Tutors support 1- 6 MAP students during their time on the scheme, and oversee the academic assignment. This is a 1,500 word assignment on a topic of the students’ choice. It aims to help students develop the essential research and academic writing skills needed to be a successful university student.

The programme runs from April to September and during the course of the programme tutors meet with each student twice. These meetings are 45 minute one-to-one sessions and further communication is done via email. Tutors also mark draft and final assignments. Training, support and resources will be provided for all tutors.

Payment

Payment is two £30 payments for every MAP student you tutor – one payment after the first meeting and one after the final assessment has been made.
