Are you getting the most of the Library?

Starting a postgraduate course can be pretty intense and academic expectations overwhelming so managing that step up is sometimes challenging. Getting the most out the Library is crucial to your research and success.

We spoke to John, a Teaching and Learning Librarian, about how the Library can support you when you need more than just a book. This is what he had to say:

As a postgraduate student you will be expected use a wider range of information resources in your independent study, in order to provide evidence in support of your ideas.  With this wider range of resources you will have to be more critical in what you read and include in your own work, as well as be able to keep track of it all.

These are some of the things the University Library can help you with.  From identifying the right databases for different types of information and how to use them effectively; evaluating the quality of the information you find and how to use these information sources within your own work; to keeping track of the sources you have used and read by using reference management tools, the Library is on hand to support you with your studies.

My Learning Essentials provides you with the opportunity to attend workshops where you can work on developing these skills with input from a librarian and from fellow students. Our online learning resources will also help you with the development of these skills which are crucial to your success as a postgraduate student.

We also hold regular drop-in sessions where you can come to talk through any difficulties you might be having with a member of our team. We are very experienced (and friendly!) and we have helped many of your fellow students to get back on the right track with their studies throughout the years.
