5 new ways to explore your city

Published on 3 November 16

It's so easy to get stuck into the routine of everyday life on campus and let the countless opportunities as students in Manchester pass you by. This semester, get involved and set yourself a personal goal to introduce something totally different into your weekly schedule.

  1. Give back

Volunteering may be one of those things that you have always wanted to do, but never made time for. But why not?

There are so many different volunteering opportunities to get involved in, locally and internationally. We support volunteering abroad with our flagship sponsored project Team Uganda, through our Trusted Partners, and by giving advice and guidance to those of you wishing to find your own volunteering overseas. Check out the Volunteer Hub.

  2. Get starry-eyed

This is no secret to all you North Campus-ers! The Godlee Observatory on the roof of the Sackville Street Building is something of a dream. Escape from another rainy day in the city and join Manchester Astronomical Society where you can gaze at the stars.

  3. Parlez-vous français?

Have you always liked the idea of knowing another language but never quite managed to get round to learning one? Perhaps this dream ended in the GCSE French classroom.

How about a completely relaxed and informal take on learning with a class at the International Society? Taught by volunteers and without a single exam in sight, you can really immerse yourself in another language for the love of it and not just because you're being examined. Check out the timetable and find out what languages are on offer!

  4. Get published

Did you know The Mancunion is the UK's largest student newspaper? Our official paper covers everything from fashion to music and film so you are sure to find a niche which you're passionate about. If you've got a story and want to get heard, drop an editor from the relevant section an email and get writing!

  5. A foodie's dream

Manchester is the ultimate foodie city, it's warm, multicultural vibe brings with it a hub of international cuisine. I mean, we’re home to the Curry Mile, right? But there's so much more than that – the opening of the Corn Exchange brought a whole new meaning to urban eating, from Vietnamese street food at Pho to Brazilian barbeque at Cabana. What type of cuisine have you never tried before?
