Six tips for studying away from campus

Published on 8 December 16

You might not want to think about exam prep or the assignments you've been set, but if you're heading off campus it's important you're prepared for getting your work done. Here are some useful tips for studying away from campus.

1. Have a designated work environment

If you're studying away from campus you need a proper place to work, with enough space for you to sprawl all of your materials out and get stuck in. Make sure you have a proper desk, or a quiet place where you won't be disturbed while you work.

2. Use your local library or local university library

If you find the lure of the sofa or the fridge too much, have you considered going to work at your local university library? You’ll have less distractions and working to their opening hours will encourage you to work to a schedule. Check the SCONUL website for access rights. As an undergraduate you can use this as a place to study during the vacation. As a postgraduate you have some borrowing rights.

3. Know what systems you can access off campus – and how to do it!

Did you know that you can access the library catalogue, all the databases, eBooks, email and personal storage when you are off campus? Here’s all the information you need to get started.

4. Have print outs of what you need and download everything before you go

There will still be things you need to take with you. So, make sure you've loaned the essential textbook, have downloaded the papers and reviews you need (or know which they are)and have all of your lecture notes with you before you go. Have a checklist and tick it off whilst packing.

5. Have a work schedule and stick to it

We all know how tempting it is to stay in bed until noon work until four and then go off to see a friend in the evening, but can you afford to do this? Make sure you're doing all the work you need to; plan what work you're going to do each day.

6. Treat yourself

Christmas and the lead up to Christmas can a busy time and it’s important that you also take a break. Whether it’s an episode of your favourite programme, a snack, or a meet up with some friends, make sure you aren't overloading yourself with unrealistic goals and spend some time doing the things you enjoy!

Don’t forget, the library's My Learning Essentials  has some great resources (including online ones that can be viewed off campus) to help you organise your work and refine your study and exam skills.
