Living in halls can be great. Being surrounded by potential new friends, all in the same boat as you and from a huge array of backgrounds means that your first year in halls could well be one of your most memorable. However communal living can bring some challenges that take a bit of getting used to, so we've got together 8 tips to make sure your time in halls is the best it can be.

Whether you've spent the last year in halls, you'll probably have a good idea of co-habiting etiquette, however moving into private accommodation means you lose University cleaners and wardens and gain a whole new level of independence. There are more than 40,000 students descending on the city of Manchester over the next couple of weeks, and with so much going on it can be hard to choose what to do! With an awesome calendar of events planned from fairs, food markets and festivals to tours, talks and trips - not to mention Pangaea and our other welcome parties – we've made life a little easier and picked out some of our welcome highlights that you shouldn't miss out on.

Manchester is one of the UK’s leading science cities, and is home to a huge number of scientists working at the leading edge of their fields. This September, Science Uncovered brings together 50 researchers for an after-hours takeover of Manchester Museum.

Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD) is one of the largest, single construction projects in higher education and is part of The University of Manchester’s £1 billion 10-year masterplan to create a world-class, single campus for our students, staff and visitors. •Welcome for students living at home
During Welcome Week, in the Students' Union Outhouse (where the old RBS bank used to be), we're creating a dedicated Home Away from Home space for students living off campus. The space will be a place for you to relax and enjoy some free tea, coffee and cake, away from the hustle and bustle of Welcome Fair.
